An American Tale - Elvis Presley
Elvis lives -- if not in the flesh, then as an
icon of American culture.
Two
decades after his death at age 42 the story of Elvis Aaron Presley is more
than just fascination. Elvis Presley is known as the king of rock 'n' roll. He was one of the first
musicians to combine elements of African-American and white music, an
explosive combination that changed music and culture to this
day.
More than a sex symbol who died before his time. The
Elvis Presley phenomenon is a peculiarly
American tale, and that no doubt explains a big part of its resonance.
It's also a tragedy: a
self-made man who gained everything in his dreams -- fame, wealth, and
admiration -- only to become a victim of his own
lifestyle.
The only son of a working class
family from Tupelo, Mississippi, he completed high school
in Memphis and became a national sensation
as a teen-ager. In his early years, everything Presley did worked like
magic. His bump and grind on stage drove his mostly female audiences into
a frenzy. Skilled musicians may have scoffed at his string-breaking act,
but Presley knew how to sing with soul, and was a perfectionist when it
came to recording. Moreover, he was a master at playing to the press,
never coming across as cocky, despite the sneering rebel routine he
practiced on stage. For years, Presley didn't drink or smoke, with the
exception of the odd filtered
cigars.
"This is a decent, fine boy," Ed Sullivan said of Presley on
national television in a huge boost to his career in
1957.
With his fresh sound and attitude, Presley burst onto
America at a time when the
nation's parameters were narrow and its prosperous youth bursting with
energy. And at time of pre-packaged stars, Elvis distinguished himself
through his authenticity. With his physical performances, outrageous
clothes and singing style, he broke many of the rules of his day, rules
that today seem quaint by comparison. Presley was always a rebel at heart,
but he never left his working-class roots. He had an effortless way of
expressing himself that continues to inspire
artists.
Just as he was propelled by the
forces he unleashed, Presley also became overwhelmed by them. In his later
years he became sometimes sad and over weight parody of himself,
surrounded by guns, languishing in the isolation of hotels and his
white-columned estate near Memphis often induced by the now
well documented pills. Even during his long decline during the 1970s,
there were flashes of brilliance. But he grew increasingly unhappy and
felt trapped by the persona he had built. Eventually, his stardom -- and
his life -- veered out of control.
Presley's
humble upbringings were a big part of the legend. His father,
Vernon, struggled to provide for
the family by working odd jobs in Tupelo, once
serving time in prison for writing a bad check. But he and Elvis' mother
Gladys worked hard to provide a stable household for their only son, Elvis
(his twin brother, Jessie Garon, died at birth).
In search of
opportunity, the Presley’s moved to Memphis in 1948, where they stayed in
public housing for a while and eventually moved into a single-family home
in a predominately black neighbourhood.
Memphis was a music
town, home to colourful talents and radio personalities who made it their
business to offer their listeners the latest in country, gospel and blues.
Elvis soaked up the melting pot of influences and relished the chance to
hang out at any number of Beale Street clubs, nervously watching the
habits and banter of the local
talent.
A loner in high school, Elvis made little impression. He
slicked back his hair, carried his guitar on his back and hung out in
record stores. He fancied himself a good singer, a talent he honed as a
boy in gospel choirs at the Assembly of God church. Even as a boy, he had
a knack for memorizing and interpreting tunes; during high school he
nervously entertained classmates at a student talent show. Much to his
amazement, he won the top prize and then performed an encore. Emboldened,
he decided to give the studio a shot. His first recording: a demo acetate
of "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin," cut at the
legendary Sun
Studios.
Presley was driving a truck as an electrical
apprentice after graduation, but he seemed to have an innate sense that he
would become a star. When he told friends that he would some day drive a
Cadillac, they laughed. The young Presley worked hard to make an
impression. He drove an oil-burning old
Lincoln and strolled down
Beale
Street in pink pants and white
shoes. After another trip to Sun Studios, owner Sam Phillips was impressed
enough to hook up Elvis with his first band, the Wranglers. They quickly
made a mark in the Memphis club scene and within
months were invited to play at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.
Presley's raw
performance didn't sit well at the Opry. But that didn't hinder his
career. He and his band bowled over the crowd at the Opry's competition,
the Louisiana Hayride, and he eventually
signed up for regular gigs at the venue. It's at the Hayride where Presley
met "Colonel" Tom Parker, a carnival journeyman who latched onto the
rising star and became his manager and publicist for life. Crude and
uncouth, the cigar-chomping Parker knew how to drive a hard
bargain.
Parker wasted no time in marketing his new product to the
hilt, pushing Elvis buttons and trinkets -- even lipstick and cookware.
Parker brokered Presley's first big record contract with RCA in 1955 for
$35,000, and by the next year his client was a millionaire. By 1956, the
sale of Elvis merchandise had soared to
$22 million, the Wall Street Journal reported.
During the
mid-1950s, Presley toured almost non-stop, astonishing mostly female
audiences with his frenzied routine and trademark gyrations. A riot
erupted at a concert in Jacksonville, Florida, and
girls mobbed the young musician wherever he went. His notoriety spreading,
Presley became viewed by many as a threat, an unwelcome rebel influence at
a time when tolerance for counterculture was
nonexistent.
Despite his soft-spoken humility in public,
Presley's act didn't sit well with jealous boyfriends and national pundits
who decried his growing influence. Presley was blamed in the national
press for everything from the breakdown of morality and culture to race
riots. U.S. Rep. Emanuel Celler of New
York even brought up Presley in
congressional hearings on music business "payola" and made a point of
decrying the singer's "animal gyrations." Because of those moves, the
cameras of the Ed Sullivan program showed Presley only from the waist
up.
But he was a hit; a phenomena. Moving
from music to the movie screen Presley hit
Hollywood and signed a seven picture
deal in 1956. When he returned to Memphis, his parents were swollen
with pride, and they had a surprise for him: Graceland, a white-columned estate, built in 1939.
The property was for sale and without negotiating Presley bought it for
slightly more than the $100,000 asking price. He and his family settled
into his dream house in time for Christmas 1957, just as Presley was
shifting into something of a creative and emotional funk. Even with his
career in high gear, he struggled for inspiration, and friends expressed
concern about his moodiness.
Then there was the matter of his
imminent draft into the military. Presley stoically refused to accept the
special treatment offered by the Army. "I've worked in factories, drove a
truck, cut grass for a living, and did a hitch in a defence plant. I'll do
whatever they tell me, and I won't be asking no special favours," he said.
1958 was a pivotal year for the young star. In March he was inducted into
the Army for a two-year stint, and a few months later his mother, perhaps
his most stabilizing influence, died.
Elvis in
transition
Presley,
who was promoted to the rank of sergeant in the Army, returned to
Memphis after duty in
Germany and was greeted by a huge
reception. He promoted his return with a special "Welcome Home" episode of
Frank Sinatra's variety show. At Parker's urging Presley shifted his focus
from music to Hollywood. But due to his manager's financial demands,
Presley passed over several significant roles to concentrate on
money-making film with far less artistic merit.
Presley's
recordings also suffered due to Parker's stranglehold. The colonel
established two recording companies for Presley, demanding that composers
share their royalties with the singer. That scared off the most talented
songwriters, and the quality of Presley's recordings suffered. In 1964,
Parker limited Presley to nothing but movie soundtrack recordings. Presley
performed occasional benefit and select concerts, but for the most part
his considerable recording and performance skills languished as he spent
more and more time secluded in Graceland
and in Hollywood, focusing on karate and New Age
spiritualism.
Presley saw his status as a musician wane as a series of
British bands ascended the charts. He became depressed as he allowed
Parker to book him for weak soundtrack songs and boilerplate films. But
there were bright moments. In August 1965, at the height of the mania
swirling about them the Beatles made a storied visit to the King at his
home in Los
Angeles. As police encircled the house to
keep fans away, the musicians stared at one another in silence for several
minutes. Finally, Presley broke the ice. "Look, guys," he said, "if you're
just going to sit there and stare at me, I'm going to
bed."
"Let's talk a bit, huh?" Presley said, "And then maybe
play and sing a bit. Thrilled at the invitation to jam with their hero,
the Beatles grabbed some of Presley’s instruments for an impromptu session
that lasted late into the night. They never met
again.
Presley staged a mini-comeback in 1967 with the
release of "How Great Thou Art," a gospel record that went gold and earned
him his first Grammy
Elvis meets Priscilla
When
Elvis met Priscilla Ann Beaulieu through the introduction of a friend, he
was 24 years old, she 14. He was immediately taken with the petite,
mousy-haired girl, and agreed to follow strict orders from her father, Air
Force Capt. Joseph Beaulieu, to see Priscilla on a more and more frequent
basis. He or his father had to pick her up for every date. And she was to
be supervised for every visit.
When he was discharged from
the Army, he started his marathon string musicals. Priscilla didn't hear
from him again for months. And she didn't see him again until 1962, when
he asked her to visit him in Los
Angeles.
For this visit, Elvis agreed
once again to a long list of stipulations from Priscilla's military
father, including that she must write home daily. Breaking the rules,
Elvis took her to Las Vegas the day after she arrived, where he bought her
a new, sophisticated wardrobe and arranged for a hairdresser in their Las
Vegas hotel to give her elaborate hairdos and heavy makeup, the way he
liked it, daily. They made sure Priscilla's letters would be postmarked
from the right city by having her pre-write several letters, which a
friend of Elvis mailed from L.A.
Elvis, not yet 30 years old, had already started taking
sleeping pills to help him fall asleep. He and his entourage of bodyguards
and assistants usually retired near dawn.
Fashioning a
perfect bride Priscilla visited Elvis one more time, for Christmas at
Graceland, before they arranged for
her permanent move to Memphis. When she returned home
from her Christmas trip, Elvis began asking her parents for permission to
let her return; he promised to enrol her in a private Catholic school.
Faced with a surly daughter increasingly uninterested in school in
Germany, her parents reluctantly
allowed her to move to Tennessee in 1961.
She barely
graduated, partly because of the odd hours associated with Elvis' social
life. Elvis's hours were no shorter in Memphis than they were on the road;
he rented entire movie theatres and skating rinks to entertain his friends
throughout the evening hours, and took Priscilla on after-hours shopping
sprees in exclusive Memphis boutiques.
Whatever the activity,
he was in charge -- his entourage catered to his whims, and Priscilla
recalls that he expected her to do the same. He gradually modelled her
into his ideal woman, directing her on how to dress, how to do her hair,
what makeup to wear, even how to walk and what to say.
Wedding
bells
Six
years after Priscilla moved to Memphis, she and Elvis finally wed
in a small Las
Vegas ceremony. According to Priscilla,
the honeymoon is the first time they consummated their love. Nine months
later to the day, Lisa Marie Presley was born, to the delight of Elvis,
who doted on his child.
At this point, it had been years
since any of Elvis's songs were smash hits, and he was despondent. He
sought answers in numerology and mysticism. Although he claimed that
studying new mystic philosophies kept him strong and opened up his mind to
new ideas, Colonel Parker saw it jeopardizing what little was left of his
career, and advised him to give it up.
He did, and finally
rejuvenated his career in 1968, when he returned to live performing with
the NBC special, "Elvis." This performance, and a 1972 live television
appearance, "Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii -- Via Satellite,"
re-energized him. It forced him to get back in shape, briefly cut his
reliance on sleeping pills and prescription painkillers, and inspired him
to go back on tour. He was once again on the music
charts.
But with the constant touring, he began to lose touch
with his wife, and she turned to new pursuits, for the first time learning
something about her interests and talents. Discontent with her
relationship with Elvis, and aware that he was unfaithful to her many
times during their marriage, Priscilla finally took Lisa Marie and left.
Their divorce became final in 1973, after more than a year of
separation.
They never stopped being friends, and Priscilla
intimates in her book "Elvis and Me" that they were talking about
remarrying. It was not to be.
Elvis goes
Hollywood Fun in the sun, and not much else
Even
as a boy, Elvis Presley wanted to be in movies. He realized his goal early
in life and went on to star in 33 films. The movies made him lots of money
but never satisfied his desire to be seen as a serious
actor.
Trying to capitalize on Presley's career as a music
sensation, Paramount Pictures invited the
21-year-old sensation to take a screen test. Presley, who had a knack for
memorizing lyrics and scripts, studied diligently for the role and wound
up acing the test. He signed a seven-year movie contract with Hal Wallis
and Paramount Pictures. His first film,
originally titled "The Reno Brothers," was re-named
"Love Me Tender" before its release to capitalize on the single released
in September 1956. Presley offered an appealing performance, set during
the Civil War South, and his Hollywood debut opened in
New
York to huge crowds and
generally favourable reviews.
Presley found
movie-making to be a reprieve from the mayhem he encountered on the road,
and he quickly took to the Hollywood party set. He spent many
nights carousing with Natalie Wood, Dennis Hopper and others who
considered themselves "rebels" in Hollywood. As for his acting, his technique
was a bit raw, but Presley came across as sincere, and could cop a tough
guy attitude when called. Directors generally appreciated his diligence
and willingness to learn.
Presley's early films are among his
best. He endeared himself to audiences with his performances in the
semi-autobiographical "Jailhouse Rock" (1957) and "King Creole," a 1958
film-noir co-starring Walter Matthau in which the pop singer is dogged by
his ties to organized crime.
After returning from a two-year
stint in the Army in 1960, Presley concentrated on movies, urged on by his
manager Col. Tom Parker. The cigar-chomping Dutchman figured that there
was big money to be made in Hollywood and that Elvis' career in rock
'n' roll had run its course. Parker swiftly moved to cash in on Presley's
celebrity and negotiated huge upfront payments to leverage his client's
name to the hilt. He booked the star in a series of low-budget musical
comedies with little artistic merit. The plan was to combine Presley's
recording with his moviemaking. Produce a film, coordinate holiday
appearances, record and release a soundtrack album. Despite the
boilerplate formula, demand for Elvis was insatiable. And many of the
early films, tailor-made for his personality and talent, fared well at the
box office.
It's not as if Presley, a millionaire at age 21,
needed the money. He had the talent and the opportunity to rise above the
B-movie rut and become an actor of repute. Film producers were desperate
to find another brooding and good-looking rebel in the mould of James
Dean, who died in 1955. Presley was offered significant movie roles, for
instance "Thunder Road" (1958), a highly-regarded film about moon shining
that went on to star Robert Mitchum. But Parker, who maintained an iron
clasp on Presley's business decisions, nixed that offer and
others.
After the Army, Presley burned to break out of the sing and
dance routine and play a serious role. He got his chance with the western
"Flaming Star" (1960), co-starring Barbara Eden. Elvis also had a dramatic
role in "Wild in the Country" (1961), but neither film proved to be the
breakthrough that the young actor anticipated.
Presley's most
commercially successful film was "Blue
Hawaii" (1960), in which he plays
a solder returning to his Hawaiian home and sings "I Can't Help Falling in
Love." Then, Presley shifted into beefcake formula comedy mode for a few
years -- "Girls! Girls! Girls!" (1962) "Fun in
Acapulco" (1963) "Girl Happy"
(1964). By the mid 1960s, he was demanding a million dollars a picture and
a sizeable chunk of profits, making him the richest person in
Hollywood. Rumours of an affair were
rife with co star Ann Margaret in the movie Viva
Las
Vegas but although probably true, there were
always rumours surrounding Elvis’ leading ladies.
By 1967 or so,
the formula had gone stale, and Presley's films flopped not only among
critics, but at the box office. Moreover, the happy-go-lucky tone of
Presley's films was decidedly out of synch with the increasingly angry
tenor of youth culture during the Vietnam War. Top movie producers
considered him an also-ran, and actors were reluctant to work with the
increasingly temperamental star. Depressed by the rut he had dug for
himself, Presley began to focus again on music, beginning with the Singer
Special comeback televised in 1968 that launched the final stage of his
career. Presley phased out of film during the 1970s as he reconnected with
audiences and rediscovered his roots in rock 'n' roll.
The
Comeback
With the
music world bypassing him, Presley vowed a comeback. His record sales were
plunging, and soon his movie contract would be at an end. Sensing that a
new initiative was in order, Parker worked out a deal with NBC for a
Presley television special. Presley was fired up by the prospect to show
his stuff and he went to Hawaii and, like a hungry boxer, focused on
getting into shape. In June 1968, when the show was taped before a live
audience, Presley, aged 33, was in top form. His voice was mature, his
showmanship polished, and for much of the show he wore a stunning leather
outfit designed by Bill Belew. Backed by his old band, Scotty Moore
(guitar) Bill Black (bass) DJ Fontana (drums) joined by army buddy Charlie
Hodge he belted out "That's Alright Mama" and other rocker hits, and then
shifted into crooner mode for a set of gospel numbers. For the closer, he
sang "If I Can Dream," a song written for the show. When it aired December
1968, "Elvis" was one of the highest rated shows of the
year.
Presley continued his comeback with a stint of sell-out
concerts at The International hotel, Las
Vegas and in January 1969 went on
to make his first recordings in Memphis in 14 years. The sessions
yielded four hit singles: "In the Ghetto", "Don't Cry, Daddy,"
"Kentucky Rain" and "Suspicious Minds", his last number-one hit. This
time however his new hand chosen band members where the best of the best
musicians of the day and became known as the T C B band. (Taking care of
business was one of Elvis’ insignias he had made in to jewellery and even
painted on his private jet
plane.

Quartet
In 1970, Presley returned to Caesars Palace, Las Vegas,
performed a number of concerts to an often celebrity filled audience
including major movie stars as though it was a World heavyweight boxing
title fight, where he moved cat like across the stage in a white jumpsuit,
incorporating his karate moves and handing out the much in demand scarves
as women flocked to the front of the stage. He increasingly indulged a
fascination with firearms. Paranoid about his security, Presley stocked
handguns all over his house, from the dining room to his bedroom. Another
odd Presley fascination: Law enforcement. Presley fancied himself
something of a crime vigilante, and after he wrote to President Nixon
expressing his concern about drug abuse, he visited Nixon on a whim at the
White House in December 1970 and Presley walked out with a certificate
issued by the president naming him a narcotics officer. As for Nixon, he
was given one of Presley's .45-caliber handguns.
Presley
spent much of the 1970s on the road. There were flashes of the old
brilliance moves and handing out the much in demand scarves, his concerts
never failed and packed shows at New York
City's
Madison Square Garden. But he suffered a
devastating emotional blow with the break-up in 1972 of his marriage to
Priscilla. Slender and tanned, he recovered with a January 1973 concert in
Hawaii televised live across the world, a show that
was watched by more people than the moon landing and more than a decade
before the Live Aid concerts. However later that year, Presley was
hospitalised for pneumonia. His weight ballooned, and he became
increasingly dependent on powerful prescription pills. Through out 1974 to
77 his weight again fluctuated only this time, Presley would not get back
into shape before going on tour. After yet another stint in the hospital
in 1975, Elvis Presley went back on the road, and little did we know his
last performance would be in June 1977 in Indianapolis when he would
depart the stage for the final time to those famously announced words
“ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has left the
building”.
His health and physique had deteriorated further
during that last year, and with the publishing of a damming book “Elvis,
what happened” by his former bodyguards, Sonny and Red West due for
release, he was yet again about to embark on another sold out national
tour when it all became to much.
On his last day, shortly after
midnight August 16,
1977,
Elvis returned to
Graceland
from a game of racket ball.. He relaxed during the early hours of the
morning before heading for the scheduled
tour. He retired to his master suite around 7
a.m.
By late morning he was found in the
bathroom by his girlfriend former Miss
Tennessee
Ginger Alden and road manager Joe Esposito and was later pronounced dead on arrival at
Memphis Baptist Memorial hospital.
Memphis and the world lay in mourning as
the shock waves reverberated around the globe. To this day he is
unrivalled as the number one recording artiste of all time and voted only
recently “Artiste of the
century”.
Well, it’s about time. You’ve been waiting and
waiting for this article release and finally it is about to become a
reality
Elvis Aaron Presley 1935 -
1977
Elvis Aaron
Presley, in the humblest of
circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo,
Mississippi
on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn,
leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis,
Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High
School there in 1953.
Elvis’ musical
influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he
heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended,
and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis
teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun
Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to
RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and
style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred
and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a
whole new era of American music and popular culture.
He starred
in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and
specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking,
live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold
over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales
have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different
albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards
and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National
Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement
Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten
Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees.
Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have
afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.
His talent, good
looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as
did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life.
Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most
important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his
Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

January 8,
1935 In
Tupelo, Mississippi, shortly before dawn, in a
two-room
house built by
her husband and her brother-in-law, Gladys Presley gives birth to
identical twin sons. The first, Jessie Garon, is born dead. The second,
Elvis Aaron, is born alive and healthy. Elvis would be their only child.
1935 -
1948 Elvis grows up within a
close-knit, working class family, consisting of his parents, grandparents,
aunts, uncles, and cousins, who all live near one another in Tupelo. There
is little money, but Vernon and Gladys do their best to provide for their
son, who is the center of their lives. They move from one house to another
in Tupelo. Elvis attends the Assembly of God Church with his family, and
the music and preaching register deeply. Other influences are black
bluesmen in the neighborhood and country music radio programs enjoyed by
his family.
1945
Ten-year-old Elvis
stands on a chair at a microphone and sings “Old Shep” in a youth talent
contest at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show, held in Tupelo.
The talent show is broadcast over WELO Radio. Second prize is $5.00 and
free admission to all the rides at the fair.
1946
Elvis’ parents cannot
afford a bicycle that Elvis wants, so Gladys talks him into accepting a
guitar instead. Elvis’ first guitar costs $12.95 and is purchased at the
Tupelo Hardware Company. The bicycle would have to wait until Christmas of
1947.
Late
1948 Elvis plays his guitar
and sings “Leaf on a Tree” for his Milam Junior High class in Tupelo as a
farewell. Elvis and his parents pack their belongings in a trunk strapped
to the roof of their 1939 Plymouth and move to Memphis, Tennessee in
search of a better life economically. Other members of the Presley and
Smith clan would follow.
1948-1953 Elvis and his parents live in public housing or low
rent homes in the poor neighborhoods of north Memphis. Life continues to
be hard. Vernon and Gladys go from job to job and Elvis attends L.C.
Humes High School. Elvis works at
various jobs to help support himself and his parents. The Presley-Smith
clan remains close-knit, and Elvis and his family attend the Assembly of
God Church. The teenage Elvis continues to be known for singing with his
guitar. He buys his clothes on Beale Street and he absorbs the black blues
and gospel he hears there. He’s also a regular audience member at the
all-night white, and black, gospel sings that are held downtown. He wears
his hair long (compared to the day’s standards) and slick, and lets his
sideburns grow. He’s really different from the other kids, a good-natured
misfit.
While at Humes High, Elvis
nervously sings with his guitar at a student talent show. Much to his own
amazement, he gets more applause than anyone else and wins, then performs
an encore. The acceptance feels good.
Late
January- Early March, 1958 Elvis films and records for his
fourth motion picture, King Creole.
March 15,
1958 Elvis performs
two shows in Memphis. These are to be his last stage performances until
after his army release in 1960.
March 24,
1958 Elvis Presley is
inducted into the U.S. Army at the Memphis Draft Board and is assigned
serial number 53310761.
March 25,
1958 Elvis gets his famous
G.I. haircut at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.
March 29,
1958 Private Presley arrives
at Fort Hood, Texas for basic training and is stationed there for six
months. His parents soon move to a temporary home near the base.
June 10,
1958 After basic training,
while on his first leave, Elvis has a recording session, his last until
1960.
July,
1958 King Creole,
Elvis’ fourth motion picture opens nationally and the reviews are the best
he will ever have for his acting. Its impressive list of co-stars and
supporting cast includes Carolyn Jones, Walter Matthau, Dean Jagger and
Vic Morrow. It becomes a top five film at the box office. This Michael
(Casablanca) Curtiz-directed movie, set in New Orleans and based upon the
Harold Robbins novel, “A Stone for Danny Fisher,” will come to be regarded
as Elvis’ finest film, his greatest acting performance, and proof positive
of his potential to have become a respected serious actor, though the
realization of this desire will remain forever out of his grasp.
August,
1958 Gladys Presley becomes
ill and returns to Memphis to be hospitalized with acute hepatitis. Elvis
is granted emergency leave and arrives in Memphis on the afternoon of
August 12th. He visits her that night, and the next day and
night. A few hours after Elvis goes home to Graceland to rest, she dies in
the early hours of August 14 at age 46. Her body lies in state at
Graceland that afternoon. Services are at the Memphis Funeral Home on the
15th, with the Blackwood Brothers singing “Precious Memories”
and “Rock of Ages,” two of Gladys Presley’s favorite hymns. She is laid to
rest at Forest Hill Cemetery, a few miles down the road from Graceland.
Elvis is devastated.
August 25,
1958 Elvis reports back to
Fort Hood.
September/October 1958 September 19, Elvis boards a
troop train to New York, later boards the USS. Randall and sails to
Germany, arriving on October 1. He will be stationed in Friedberg for 18
months, maintaining an off-base residence in Bad Nauheim, shared with his
father and grandmother, and some friends from Memphis. He finds the fans
in Europe to be as enthusiastic as those in America.
January 8,

off-camera via trans-Atlantic telephone by Dick Clark on his American
Bandstand show on ABC-TV. The show commemorates the star’s
twenty-fourth birthday. (Elvis never performed on American

Munich, then goes clubbing in Paris, which includes a visit to the Lido.

keep Elvis’ career alive with promotions and hit record releases.
November
1959 Captain Joseph Beaulieu
is transferred from Texas to Weisbaden Air Force Base near Friedberg,
accompanied by his wife and children, including his fourteen-and-a-half-
year-old stepdaughter, Priscilla Ann. (Priscilla is the only child from
Ann Beaulieu’s marriage to her first husband, James Wagner, a Navy pilot
who was killed in a plane crash when Priscilla was an infant.) Through a
mutual friend, Priscilla is invited to a party at Elvis’ home soon after
her arrival in Germany. They meet, and the rest is history.

18.
December 1966 Elvis formally
proposes marriage to Priscilla.
February 1967 Elvis buys a
163-acre ranch in Mississippi, minutes across the Tennessee state line
from Graceland. He and his entourage and their wives had become interested
in horseback riding after Elvis purchased a horse for Priscilla as a gift.
The hobby had outgrown the pasture at Graceland. Over the months to come,
Elvis and the gang will enjoy spending a lot of time at the Circle G. It
becomes a happy diversion for Elvis as his frustration and unhappiness
over the state of his career reaches its height.
March 1967 Easy Come,
Easy Go opens nationally and doesn’t do well.
RCA releases Elvis’
second gospel album, How Great Thou Art, which was recorded in

Priscilla are married in a private ceremony amongst a small group of
family and friends at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, just after 9:30 AM.

During the production, news of Priscilla’s pregnancy is announced.
September-November, 1967 Soundtrack
recording and filming for Elvis’ twenty-seventh movie (to be the
twenty-sixth released), Stay Away, Joe. In
this western-themed comedy he once again plays a character who is part
Native American. It’s a real departure from the virtually interchangeable
plots and characters in most of the films over the past several grueling
years. He has fun with this one.
December
1967 Clambake is
released nationally and goes to number fifteen at the box office. The
soundtrack album goes to number 40. January/February
1970 Some say it is a mistake to go
back to Vegas so soon, especially during the slowest season for the city.
Can he fill the seats? But, Elvis returns to the International Hotel for
another month-long engagement. This time he breaks his own attendance

September
1970 From the 9th
through the 14th Elvis takes his show on a nine-city tour. It
is a smashing success, the first tour since 1957, only these days the show
is much more elaborate . MGM films portions of the first show on
this tour for use in Elvis - That’s the Way It
Is.
Elvis has a recording session in Nashville.
November
1970 Elvis, That’s the Way It Is,
Elvis thirty-second film, opens in theaters to good reviews and good box
office. Documentaries traditionally do not do well at the box office, but
this one makes a respectable showing. It, like other Elvis movies will go
on to have a life on television and home video in years to come. An album
of the same title is released, but only one song, I Just Can’t Help
Believin’, is actually from a stage performance included in the
film. The other songs are studio recordings,
some of which Elvis performs live on stage or in rehearsal footage in the
film.

eight-city concert tour.

functions culminating in an evening awards banquet. He and nine others
accept the honor of being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of
the Nation by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (The Jaycees).
He is nervous about his acceptance speech. He is touched, excited and
deeply proud. This national honor has been given each year since the late
1930’s and recognizes young men who have made great achievements in their
field of endeavor, illustrating the opportunities available in the free
enterprise system. It also applauds humanitarianism and community service.
Scientists, inventors, performers, film makers,
politicians bound for the Presidency, and men of greatness in all fields,
have been selected for this award over the years. For Elvis, a man who
grew up poor, and, in his early career knew the sting of ridicule from the
Establishment, who, through the years has known criticism of his work,
this is one of his proudest moments. It is a sign that he has achieved
acceptance, recognition, and respect for his work and for the kind of
person he is.
Late
January/February 1971 Elvis plays another month-long
engagement at the International Hotel in Las
Vegas.
March

in varying degrees for the rest of his life.

in October.
Elvis has recording sessions
in Nashville. Much of the work is for his forthcoming album Elvis Sings
the Wonderful World of Christmas.

record and tops himself once again.
During the engagement an award
is presented to Elvis in his dressing room. It is the Bing Crosby Award
from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the organization
that also presents Grammy awards). This award is a special means of
recognition from NARAS and is named for its first recipient. The award is
not given every year as a rule. It will later be re-named the Lifetime
Achievement Award. Elvis is 36 years old.
November 5-16, 1971 Elvis goes on a

In April the gospel album He
Touched Me is released to good reviews. The album will go on to win Elvis
his second Grammy Award, this one for the category of Best Inspirational
Performance.
June 1972 Elvis continues
touring in concert, beginning with a press conference in New York on the
9th. MGM is on hand to film the conference for use in Elvis on
Tour. Elvis makes entertainment history by performing four sold-out shows
at New York’s Madison Square Garden. John Lennon, George Harrison, Bob
Dylan, David Bowie, and Art Garfunkel are among the music stars spotted at
the shows.
Nine days after it is
recorded, RCA rush-releases a live album from one of the shows - Elvis as
Recorded at Madison Square Garden. Elvis tours to seven more cities.
Elvis’ Vegas and concert tour
career is hot, hot, hot during the early to mid-seventies. He breaks
attendance records in cities all over America. Record releases also
continue.

Priscilla’s separation is formalized. A divorce is to come. Elvis has
begun seeing Linda Thompson, who will be his main female companion until
late 1976.
August 4 - September 4,
1972 Elvis plays a
month-long engagement at the Hilton in Vegas.
September 5, 1972 Elvis
participates in a press conference in Vegas announcing plans for a
television concert to be broadcast via satellite around the world from
Hawaii. It is predicted that the show will reach the largest audience in
television history and that the live album will be a big hit.
October 1972 Elvis has a
number two pop hit with the single Burning Love, one of his biggest
records in recent years.
November 1972 Elvis on Tour
opens to good reviews and good box office performance in theaters. Later,
its producers will receive the Golden Globe Award for Best Documentary of

video.
Elvis tours seven cities in
concert. The last is Honolulu, Hawaii, where he does three shows at the
Honolulu International Center Arena, the same venue that will host his
satellite special in January. Elvis appears at a press conference in
Hawaii regarding his upcoming satellite show. It is announced that it will
be a benefit for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund.
January 1973 Elvis
makes television and entertainment history with his Elvis: Aloha from
Hawaii - Via Satellite special. Performed at the Honolulu International
Center Arena on January 14, 1973, broadcast live at 12:30 AM Hawaiian
time, beamed via Globecam Satellite to Australia, South Korea, Japan,
Thailand, the Phillipines, South Vietnam and other countries. It is seen
on a delayed basis in around thirty European countries. A tape of the show
will be seen in America on April 4th on NBC. The live broadcast
in January attracts 37.8% of the viewers in Japan, 91.8% in the
Philippines, 70% in Hong Kong, and 70-80% of the viewers in Korea. The
April showing in America will attract 51% of the television viewing
audience, and will be seen in more American households than man’s first
walk on the moon. In all, it will be seen in about forty countries by one
billion to 1.5 billion people. Elvis commissions an American Eagle design
for his jumpsuit for this show, his patriotic message to his worldwide
audience.* Never has one performer held the world’s attention in such a
way. Elvis is in top form physically and vocally. This is probably the
pinnacle of his superstardom, one of the all-time great moments of his
career.
Audience tickets for the
January 14 concert and its January 12 pre-broadcast rehearsal show carry
no price. Each audience member is asked to pay whatever he or she can. The
performances and concert merchandise sales are a benefit raising $75,000
for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in Hawaii. (Kui Lee was a Hawaiian composer
who had died of cancer while still in his thirties.)
On stage with Elvis is an
orchestra and his current show cast: Joe Guercio (conductor), J.D. Sumner
& the Stamps (vocals), The Sweet Inspirations (vocals), Kathy
Westmoreland (soprano vocals), Charlie Hodge (guitar/vocals/on-stage
assistance), James Burton (lead guitar), John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar),
Jerry Scheff (bass guitar), Glen D. Hardin (piano), and Ronnie Tutt
(drums).
The soundtrack album is soon
released and goes to number one on the Billboard pop album chart, and
stays on the chart at various positions for 52 weeks. The show will later
have continued life on television and eventually home video.
In the special, Elvis’
recording of the theme song from his 1965 movie Paradise, Hawaiian Style
plays over the opening credits and scenes of Elvis’ helicopter arrival at
the airport and his walking among the fans who are there to greet him. The
concert opens with Elvis’ band playing his traditional introduction for
his seventies concerts, Theme from 2001. He sings See, See Rider, Burning
Love, Something, You Gave Me a Mountain, Steamroller Blues, My Way, Love
Me, Johnny B. Goode, It’s Over, Blue Suede Shoes, I’m So Lonesome I Could
Cry, I Can’t Stop Loving You, Hound Dog, What Now, My Love, Fever, Welcome
to My World, Suspicious Minds, I’ll Remember You (A Kui Lee composition
Elvis sings after announcing the sum raised for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund.),
Long Tall Sally/Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On, An American Trilogy (Elvis
tosses his belt into the audience), A Big Hunk o’ Love, and Can’t Help
Falling in Love (Elvis tosses his cape into the audience). The show is one
hour, including commercials. After the show, Elvis and his bandmates come
back out on stage in the empty arena and videotape performances of the
songs Blue Hawaii, Ku-u-i-po, and Hawaiian Wedding Song which he had first
done for his 1961 hit movie, Blue Hawaii, plus Early Morning Rain and No
More. All but the song No More will be inserted into the American
broadcast with Elvis seen on a montage screen with footage of Hawaiian
scenery.
A Little History on Elvis’
Costume: Elvis told Bill Belew he wanted the jumpsuit for this special to
say “America” to the worldwide viewing audience. Bill told Elvis that,
except for the American flag, he could think of nothing other than the
American Eagle. Elvis said “I like it.” And that’s how one of Elvis’ most
famous costumes came to be. Elvis had been wearing jumpsuits on stage
since 1970, and they had become quite elaborate by the time of this show.
For the past year or two he had been wearing studded, hip-length capes and
heavy studded leather belts with his jumpsuits. For the American Eagle
jumpsuit, Bill first designed a huge calf-length cape. During preparations
for the show, Elvis tried working with this cape, but it was just too
cumbersome to use. So, out went the emergency order for another cape in
the usual size.

May 2005 - The real
"Evil Elvis" Louis Rockafella reaches new lows The
announcement of Louis Rockafellas 2005 tour with Elvis Presley's original
backing singers The Sweet
Inspirations, as expected unfortunately, has
caused quite a stir with only a select few in the Elvis Impersonator
world. 2 yr campaign of hate has now gone
into overdrive. He has tried every trick in the book to stop the
tour (and failed) ! The latest
sick con is visiting message boards not only in UK but USA too, and
leaving pathetic messages of apology,
signed by Janet Fella, manager of Louis
Rockafella. We have NEVER apologised to Mr Preston and this new scheme
just reafirms what we already know, as the Mirror
stated "Evil" Any sane Elvis fan,
viewing comments and opinions publically displayed by Steve Preston on
message boards and
on Steve Prestons multiple web sites pages, can
see for themselves the type of character he is, and the damage
they are doing to the name and memory of Elvis.
The most disgusting part of it all is
that Steve Preston is now personally attacking The Sweet Inspirations with
direct
comments in his frustration that all his
attempts to try stop the tour did not succeed. To insult Elvis
Presley's very own personal friends is the lowest of the low.

Elvis "EVIL ELVIS" Net War Arrest Threat Exclusive by Rod
Chaytor An Elvis Impersonator faces arrest for an internet harassment
campaign on a rivel. It began when a web site claimed , he was No.1 in
the country's top ten Elvis acts. Professional performer
Louis Rockafella, 43, found bookings dried up after the site listed him
under "amateur acts"
and carried links to attacks on his singing and
outfits. He and wife Janet, 32, - his manager - discovered the
"independant" site was work. Louis of Ormskirk, Lancs, said:
"The work has just disapeared. Our livelihood is at
stake" Louis was sent solicitors letters threatening to sue
for defamation and malicious falsehood. He told Louis Lawyers
he would remove the slurs and not repeat them.
But messages on a fans' site hinted Louis' web address was for sale
and might be used for porn. Preston sent Janet emails including a
picture of her with a Preston of Lancs, refused to
comment.

Mirror First and foremost, I am an Elvis fan. I am also a big fan
of Louis Rockafella. But, having read Rod Chaytor's
Exclusive on the harassment campaign against
Louis, I felt compelled to offer my full support to him and his wife,
Janet. I first saw Louis, almost
2 years ago, in Southport and many times since. He has always given
a 100% plus pure
Elvis tribute. In fact, I have never seen
or heard better. No matter how big or small the venue & whether
it be a
private function, charity event or stage show,
Louis has always been a true professional. I feel sad
to think what the King might say to all of this being done in his
name. I would like to congratulate Louis and
Janet on the dignified manner they have held
throughout. I hope it will all be over soon and wish you both well
for the
future ~ There is no finer couple you could
wish to meet. There are many thousands of Elvis tributes
around the world, each with there own style and supporters. I have
seen quite a few, myself, over the years.
But, none compare to The Spirit of Elvis ~ King of All Tributes.
Yes, you
might say that I'm bias in my opinion ~ With

months ago, October 2003 we were added to a website of Elvis
impersonators, in an inappropriate section,
we pointed out the mistake but the website
owner refused to adjust it's content. Our legal representatives were
able
to secure an agreement with the owner of the
websites Mr Stephen Ljevar, (aka Elvis tribute act Steve Preston)
concerned to no longer include any mention of
us on his sites. That agreement is shown below, signed and
dated 19th July 2004
Mr Ljevar also purchased the domain name
"louisrockafella.com", we believe that this was done in order to
misrepresent our business to our customers and
fan base. Mr Ljevar, soon began adding derogatory and
unfair remarks aimed towards us and an unfair and inaccurate review
onto his website. This was done in
complete disregard for the agreement signed. We responded by
explaining to all
concerned that there was no substance to Mr
Ljevar's claims, we presented the reality of the situation on our
website and attempted to negotiate
circumstances whereby the untruths contained on his websites would be
removed, as would the truth of his actions be
removed from ours. Just when we felt that we would be able
to sensibly conclude these matters, Mr Ljevar decided instead to publish
onto his website a falsified and rather
groveling apology pertaining to be from us, which he himself had
composed.
No such apology was ever made by us. Mr
Ljevar then proceeded to litter his website with many pages that included
communications from us that he had edited to
suit his own ends. The situation has escalated in recent
weeks, currentely 28 pages of malicious attacks displayed on Mr Ljevars
web
sites. This situation has reached a point where
we felt that we were left with no option but to take the least preferred
option of pursuing this continuing matter by
legal processes. Feb. 2005 - The 200+ page dossier has been
been handed to the internet crime department of Lancashire Police.
Louis said"If undertakings are not given or the
behaviour recurs, This process is now underway. Yours
sincerely. Janet Fella On behalf of Louis

artist We display the following links for
information purposes The following web sites are all owned

elvis-impersonators.co.uk, elvis-impersonators.com The two sites above
are heavily advertised on the internet as the UK's Top 10 Elvis
impersonators and Elvis tribute
agency. They claim the sites are owned by a
company in Houston Texas, when infact they are owned by
Steve Preston who places himself in a number
one position on a list of "top ten Elvis acts" a list designed by himself
1. / For details of web site ownership see link

ETA's ask yourself, would you accept the content of Steve Prestons sites
if it were targetted at you ?
Feel free to compare the content of http://www.louisrockafella.co.uk/Case_file.htm with the many pages Steve
Preston has posted in recent months.( A
staggering 26 pages as of today 21 Feb 2005 ) The allegation that we
are
responsible for the bomb scare is false.
Ask yourself who is doing the attacking, who is responsible for a hate
campaign. We have offered a sensible
solution, this offer wasn't taken. The only other solution available
to us is to now use the
courts. Continuous damage to our
professional reputation by way of manipulated statements, false
allegations and
unsubstantiated claims is something we simply
cannot accept, nobody else would accept this treatment either. We
reserve the right to defend ourselves, you
would too. To clarify, prior to these matters going to court,
once the 7 points are satisfied that are in breach of the undertaking
as signed by Steve Ljevar aka Steve Preston
19/07/04, we will remove
http://www.louisrockafella.co.uk/Case_file.htm from our web presence and express no further
interest in SP or his
business. 21/02/05 To quote
Steve Preston with reference to the domain name: " www.Louisrockafella.com will NEVER be
offered in any negotiations

Elvis Tribute Artist...
Okay, so you haven’t actually been waiting, but started to wonder what
happened back in January right? No? Okay, so you haven’t been waiting, and
haven’t really thought much about this entire site-period. I understand...
a little heartbroken, but I do understand.
Either way... whether you’ve been waiting for it or not, (And I
won’t go into the reasons for the delay-saving you all the dreaded
monologue) without further ado ... Let’s find out what it takes to be
an Elvis Tribute Artist.
You do realize that to go tramping through this ground is considered
a suicidal attempt, don’t you?
The lineage of people who’ll be standing in line to throw the preverbal
“Pie-In-The-Face” is only a slight concern to me. I will attempt to write
this in a dignified manner, but please don’t hesitate to look the other
way if I end up with a little pie ala nose gracing my face!
On with the story...
The history of Elvis look-a-likes, now more notably called, Elvis
Tribute Artists, stem back to when Elvis was still shooting bullets at
television sets, along with light bulbs in his pool!
I would love to know when, and who was the actual first guy to step on
stage and try to fill the big guy’s shoes, and if anyone can give me a
correct answer with some data behind it, I will be indebted forever!
To step on stage and try to catch the persona of a music hero would
have been a great daring feat in itself back then, but to do so now is
more like standing on stage and waiting for rotten tomatoes or roses to be
tossed your way. You will either be liked, or you won’t. They will either
reach to grab your sweat soaked towel, or reach up and prepare to bonk
ones hopes and dreams!
What exactly does it take to become one of the godsends of ETA’s? Well,
over the past few years I have been watching from the sidelines and
working with the best... it occurs to me that it is painfully obvious
which ones should pursue their career, or to save face and just be
remembered as the guy that brought the house down-at your local talent
show.
First off, I am not here to insult anyone, and if you have won a talent
show- I am not directing my comments to you, in fact take pride in
yourself, regardless of where you are at in your life, or what talents you
have shown appreciative audiences.
I am simply going to see it from a fans point of view. As an Elvis fan
and a fan of some of my dearest ETA friends, I have a tendency to be a
little harsher then some may be. Please be patient with me and hear me
out.
I made a comment in the poll that I had running back in December, about
tennis shoes, and white jogging suits. Would it surprise you that I have
actually seen some of these, and that those particular individuals like to
speak “at” you as if they were the King resurrected? Oh yeah, it’s true
and it’s not a good vision-trust me! As far as I know, Elvis never spoke
down to people and he never had a big head- and I KNOW that Elvis never
wore jogging suits and runners for his performances.
THOSE my dear readers are the ETA’s that really irritate me!
Whether or not they have $3000.00 jumpsuits on, or your K-Mart line of
jogging apparel, they should not “act” as the one they portray to be.
Do clothes say it all? Well of course not, (Yes, I’m sitting here in
my comfies)... but in the professional world, clothes do matter-and a
lot!
If you’re a janitor, would you head out in a suit or heels? No, not
likely. What about a banker, would you leap into work early in the morning
in just your skivvies? Pardon me, but I rest my point.
As a professional, or non professional career person- one should dress
accordingly. Although I doubt anyone really cares one way or another if
your local stock boy wears a three piece suit, complete with tie and
cummerbund to work or not. Although, as an Elvis Tribute Artist- you best
be heading to your job site, completely professional!
If I wanted to attend a show and see some guy up there trying to
maneuver his large frame in an itty bitty jogging suit- I would head out
to a Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum! That would be like me trying to
strut my stuff like Sharon Stone in a bikini-NOT-give me a break! I
may be able to act like Sharon Stone (which I can’t of
course)...but I know dang well I’d never be able to wear a bikini (if
they made them my size) like her! When I head out to a performance, I want
a professional person standing on stage, and displaying as close
approximation to Elvis Presley as humanly possible.
Whether or not he has singing talent is of course important, but with
so many great singers, it’s hard to sometimes narrow the field down to the
“best”. As far as I can see, 50% will sound okay, 40% sound great, 5%
sound “awesome”, and 5% are either tone deaf or can’t carry a note. If he
can’t sing a lick, then I’m not going to be punished further down the
road, I just won’t go and see him again-ever. He is the master of his own
destruction at that point. I will not be a part of it- but for god’s sake
- at least try to look good!
Elvis was the finest human form of a man that anyone could ever
possibly imagine. I think God put him on this earth, not only to bring
music to the world, and weld hands of friendship together, but I think
god’s last magical thought must have been, “here’s a little special
treat for thy women’s eyes!”
No, I don’t expect perfection when I’m looking at an ETA on stage
although I am looking for a sincere form of appreciation to the man who
brought this person down this particular career path. I expect him, not
only to be presentable, but to also know his subject inside and out. I
also expect the person to sing from the heart, be humble, and to take
great pride in his looks and overall appearance.
If you’re going to head to the stage in front of an audience, you
better make sure you give that first impression your best. It’s those
first few seconds that make the world of difference. You can always touch
up the audience later... but if your going to make friends with some of us
hardened and seasoned Elvis fans- you better be prepared to be a bug under
a magnifying glass!
To be perfectly honest, we simply don’t want anyone that harms the
memory of a simple country boy-turned King. We have generations following
close on our heels, and these guys really are setting an example.
If you just can’t afford certain clothes or dedicate time polishing up
this career, then wait it out. Wait until everything comes together for
you. Then you will know if it’s the right thing or not. Your voice is a
talent you were born with, you can enhance it and train it... but your
dress apparel is entirely up to you. You don’t have to be rich to look
good.
Just please don’t come on stage as a professional in white joggers
and running shoes!
I would like to leave you all with this one thought to ponder...
If Elvis was sitting out in the audience, would he be pleased with
you and your performance? Would he clap you on the back and say “good
job my friend” or would he pull out his revolver and mistake you for
Robert Goulet?

Elvis"
Net war
arrest threat By Rod Chaytor
AN Elvis impersonator faces
arrest for an internet harassment campaign on a rival. It began when
a website claimed Steve Preston, 50, was No1 in the country's top 10
Elvis acts.
Professional performer Louis Rockafella, 43, found
bookings dried up after the site listed him under "amateur acts" and
carried links to attacks on his singing and outfits. He and wife Janet,
32 - his manager - discovered the "independent" site was Preston's
work.
Louis, of Ormskirk, Lancs, said: "The work has just
disappeared. Our livelihood is at stake."
Preston was sent
solicitor's letters threatening to sue for defamation and malicious
falsehood. He told Louis' lawyers he would remove the slurs and not
repeat them. But messages on a fans' site hinted Louis' web address
was for sale and might be used for porn.Preston sent Janet emails
including a picture of her with a lizard's head.
Preston, of
Haslingden, Lancs, refused to comment. Police said: "If undertakings are
not given or the behaviour recurs, he will be placed under
arrest."

Louis Rockafella can also be seen on my website of Elvis
Impersonator autographs, The Hall of Kings at www.biboland.com
UPDATE:
It appears someone
wrote in and left a comment pretending to be Louis Rockafella or
associated with him. They were not. The comment has been removed. We
apologize for any wrong impression that was left by this comment.
Sometimes things slip through. I thank Janet Fella bringing this to my
attention.

Hi Janet Fella here, Louis Rockafella manager. Just to add the last post by anonymous was not made by L.Rockafella or any one on his behalf. We have never apologised to Steve Preston. The Mirror had viewed the 200 page dossier of evidence and drew thir own conclusion after checking all the evidence and speaking to solicitors. The Mirror do not print anything without evidence to back it up. What was printed is the truth. Even now after almost 2years of web harrasment from Steve Preston he continues with his campaign. In the nexty few weeks we start a national tour UK with Elvis Presleys original backing singers The Sweet Inspirations. We will be performing in 8 venues across the country and tickets are in strong demand. Much to the annoyance of Mr Preston, our tour is set to be a huge success!
See the web site at

We the police never threatned anyone with arrest over this matter. Please remove that comment as it is fabricated.
